Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has successfully completed testing its Universe fuel cell-powered electric bus in collaboration with Enowa, the energy and water infrastructure subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Neom project. The trials took place under the harsh weather conditions of Saudi Arabia, with the vehicle performing well in high-altitude areas reaching altitudes of over 2,000 meters and overcoming gradients of up to 24%.

The purpose of these trials was to simulate public transport routes in Neom’s future core business district of Trojena and to demonstrate the performance and practicality of hydrogen-powered vehicles in high-altitude conditions. This achievement builds on the MoU signed between HMG and Neom’s Mobility sector in September 2024 to explore bringing zero-emission mobility solutions to the region. Enowa also installed the first hydrogen refueling station in the area to support a range of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The successful testing of the Universe fuel cell-powered electric bus showcases HMG’s commitment to innovative and sustainable transportation solutions. By partnering with Enowa and Neom, the automaker is paving the way for the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the region. The trials in Saudi Arabia’s harsh weather conditions prove the reliability and efficiency of FCEVs in challenging environments.

In addition to the technological advancements, HMG’s collaboration with Enowa and Neom highlights the importance of sustainable mobility solutions in reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental conservation. The installation of the hydrogen refueling station further supports the infrastructure needed for the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the region.

Overall, HMG’s successful testing of the Universe fuel cell-powered electric bus under Saudi Arabia’s harsh weather conditions marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable transportation solutions. With continued innovation and collaboration with key partners, Hyundai Motor Group is driving the transition towards a greener and more sustainable future for the automotive industry.
