Foxconn to sell former car factory in Ohio for $375m

Taiwan’s Foxconn has recently closed a deal to sell a former car factory in Lordstown, Ohio, for $375 million, which includes the facility’s machinery, as reported by Reuters.

Despite the sale, Foxconn intends to maintain operations at the site, with a focus on a wider range of products that align with its strategic objectives. While the exact products to be manufactured at the plant were not disclosed, the company highlighted the significant growth in its cloud and networking product business.

A source familiar with the situation mentioned to Reuters that the Ohio facility is expected to support artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Spanning over six million square feet, the site is six times larger than a plant Foxconn is currently constructing in Houston for the production of Nvidia’s GB300 AI servers.

Foxconn initially acquired the Lordstown plant in 2022 from the now-bankrupt US electric vehicle startup Lordstown Motors Corp for $230 million, as part of its expansion into the electric vehicle sector. The company commenced pre-production at the Lordstown Motors plant in 2022, aiming to produce electric pickup trucks through a partnership with Lordstown. However, the collaboration soured, leading to Lordstown Motors’ bankruptcy and subsequent legal action against Foxconn.

In a recent announcement, Foxconn stated that it sold the factory to an existing business partner without providing further details. The company reiterated its commitment to automotive customers in the US, emphasizing its ability to swiftly scale up automotive production to meet demand when necessary.

Foxconn’s recent initiatives demonstrate its ongoing diversification beyond its traditional role as an iPhone assembler. Last week, the company revealed a strategic partnership with industrial motor manufacturer TECO Electric & Machinery to develop data centers. Additionally, in June 2025, Foxconn entered a joint development agreement with Elektrobit to create EV.OS, a new AI-centric software platform for software-defined electric vehicles.

Overall, Foxconn’s strategic moves reflect its evolution and expansion into new sectors, showcasing its adaptability and commitment to innovation in the ever-changing tech industry.
