In a remarkable incident that showcased the exceptional safety features of electric vehicles, a BYD Song Plus EV survived being struck by lightning unscathed. The incident took place in Beihai, Guangxi, on August 6, where both the driver and the vehicle emerged without any harm.

Following the incident, a mechanic inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the power battery pack, electronic control system, and motor showed no signs of short-circuiting. Despite two lightning strike points on the roof, the vehicle’s exterior remained intact.

Li Yunfei, BYD’s general manager of brand and public relations, shared the incident on Weibo and mentioned that the Song Plus EV endured three lightning strikes, with all critical components remaining unscathed.

The mechanic quoted by Chongqing Daily expressed surprise at the incident, stating, “This is the first time in my 12-year career that I have seen a vehicle struck by lightning!” The vehicle’s power cutoff protection function activated during the lightning strikes, underscoring its robust safety performance.

The Song Plus EV, part of BYD’s Ocean series, has a starting price in China ranging from RMB 149,800 to RMB 175,800. Another model in the Song family is the hybrid Song Plus DM-i, priced between RMB 135,800 and RMB 175,800.

BYD’s strong performance in the NEV market was highlighted by the sale of 344,296 NEVs in July, with the Song family contributing significantly to this figure. The family includes various models like the Dynasty series Song L EV, Song L DM-i, Song Pro DM-i, and the Ocean series Song Plus EV and Song Plus DM-i.

($1 = RMB 7.1827)
