BYD undercuts Tesla with another dirt-cheap electric SUV

BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has recently launched its latest electric SUV, the BYD Atto 2, in Hong Kong. The Atto 2 is aimed at attracting younger drivers with its affordable price point, starting at just HKD 169,800, or roughly $21,700. This makes it about 30% cheaper than Tesla’s most affordable model, the Model 3 RWD, which is priced from HKD 249,000 ($31,700).

The Atto 2, which first went on sale in Europe in January and was launched in China under the name Yuan Up in 2024, offers a range of up to 410 km (254 miles) and can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 38 minutes. It features BYD’s Smart Cockpit, which includes voice control, smartphone integration, and various driver-assist features.

BYD’s Asia-Pacific sales manager, Liu Xueliang, emphasized that the company’s main focus is to attract young people and offer the best value-for-money products. Despite Hong Kong being a relatively small market, it serves as a key entry point into the global right-hand drive market.

BYD has been gaining momentum in overseas markets, outpacing competitors like Tesla in countries like Germany and the UK. While Tesla’s sales have dropped significantly in these markets, BYD’s sales have surged, showing a 390% increase compared to last year in Germany and more than quadrupling its sales in the UK.

With BYD dominating several global markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Spain, Italy, and Brazil, the question arises whether the company will continue to gain market share as Tesla CEO Elon Musk warns of “rough quarters” ahead.

In conclusion, the BYD Atto 2 offers a compelling option for consumers looking for an affordable electric SUV with a range that can meet their daily commuting needs. With its competitive pricing and features, BYD is positioning itself as a strong contender in the electric vehicle market.
