Ex-Tesla employees start EV charging company after Elon Musk fired everyone

From the aftermath of Elon Musk’s controversial decision to fire the entire Supercharger team last year, a new player has emerged in the world of EV charging: Hubber. Founded by former Tesla employees Harry Fox, Connor Selwood, and Hugh Leckie, Hubber aims to revolutionize urban high-powered EV charging, particularly focusing on addressing the lack of fast and reliable charging options for taxis and commercial vehicles.

The trio, who collectively oversaw the rollout of 100 Tesla Supercharger sites with 1,200 chargers across the UK & Ireland, decided to take their expertise and create a company that would cater to the unique needs of urban EV drivers. With a strong emphasis on providing efficient charging solutions for high-utilization vehicles like taxis, Hubber is set to fill the urban charging gap in major cities.

Unlike traditional EV charging companies, Hubber is looking at unconventional sites such as old warehouses or gas stations to transform them into large-scale charging hubs. These locations will feature fast charging bays tailored for commercial vehicles, with amenities like restrooms and vending machines for drivers on the go.

One of Hubber’s key strategies is to anticipate the future of autonomous vehicles, ensuring that their charging hubs can accommodate driverless ride-hailing services like Waymo. While autonomous charging solutions are still in development, Hubber is positioning itself as a forward-thinking provider in the EV charging space.

With a recent £60 million investment secured, Hubber is gearing up to expand beyond the UK and Ireland. Their first facility, located in South London near Forest Hill Station, is set to open on August 20th, offering free fast charging for its inaugural week of operation.

In a landscape where EV charging options are becoming increasingly vital, Hubber’s approach to urban high-powered charging is poised to make a significant impact. By leveraging their experience from Tesla’s Supercharger team, the founders of Hubber are well-equipped to lead the charge in revolutionizing urban EV infrastructure. As the company sets its sights on future growth and expansion, the industry is eager to see how Hubber will shape the future of urban EV charging.
