Europeans major on tech and design at Munich to slow China’s march

The upcoming Munich motor show is set to be a significant event for European car manufacturers, as they showcase their latest models and technology in a bid to revitalize the market post-Covid. With Chinese car makers also making a strong presence at the event, the competition is heating up as both sides vie for supremacy in the electric vehicle arena.

According to market researcher Inovev, 14 Chinese car makers will be exhibiting at the Munich motor show, compared to 10 European brands. The event is expected to see the launch of 23 new electric models, three plug-in hybrids, and two hybrids, with German car makers taking center stage with their cutting-edge technology and design.

BMW will be premiering its Neue Klasse platform with the new iX3 SUV, while Mercedes-Benz will unveil the new electric GLC EQ, showcasing the new MB:EA platform. Both SUVs boast advanced technology such as 800V platforms for rapid charging and a software-first approach to electronics and digital information. BMW claims an impressive EV range of nearly 500 miles, while Mercedes-Benz features the largest screen ever fitted to a Mercedes at 39 inches wide.

While the Chinese car makers have been gaining market share in Europe, particularly in Spain and the UK, European premium brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz are confident in their ability to compete with their Chinese counterparts. The Volkswagen Group, for example, will be showcasing its future strength in small EVs with the Volkswagen ID Polo, ID Cross, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq.

As Chinese car makers continue to expand their presence in Europe, European manufacturers are doubling down on their design strength to maintain their brand advantage and pricing power. Models like Audi’s Concept C, Cupra’s Tindaya concept, and Skoda’s Vision O are just a few examples of the innovative designs being showcased at the Munich motor show.

With Chinese car makers predicted to reach a 10% market share in Europe by 2030, European car manufacturers are banking on the models launched at the Munich motor show to slow down this growth and maintain their competitive edge in the market. The event promises to be a showcase of advanced technology, innovative design, and fierce competition between European and Chinese car makers.
