Bertone has announced plans to put the Marcello Gandini-designed Runabout concept into production as a retro-futuristic supercar, 55 years after it was initially revealed. The new Runabout stays true to the sleek, wedge-like proportions of the original 1969 concept but includes several updates to make it more modern and road-friendly.
One notable change is the replacement of the unconventional headlights, which were originally mounted high on the shoulder line next to the occupants’ heads. The new Runabout features pop-up headlights integrated into the front end for a more practical design.
Additionally, the need to climb over a high sill to enter the cockpit has been eliminated with the addition of doors, and side mirrors have been added for improved visibility. The front grille has also been enlarged to accommodate the powerful 489bhp V6 engine, a significant upgrade from the original 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine sourced from Autobianchi.
While the 1969 concept was only shown as a barchetta with an open interior, the production version of the new Runabout will also offer a targa top for versatility.
Production is set to begin in mid-2026 with a starting price of €350,000 (approximately £290,000 excluding VAT). This new car is the first in a series of road-going models that pay homage to Bertone’s esteemed heritage by blending classic designs with modern performance.
The original Runabout concept also played a significant role in influencing the Fiat X1/9 sports car, which was produced from 1972 to 1989 and was even manufactured by Bertone from 1981 to 1989.
