Volkswagen Group Africa has officially launched production of a cutting-edge electric farm tractor at its state-of-the-art facility in Gashora, Rwanda. This initiative aims to promote modern, low-emission agricultural practices in Africa, addressing the challenges faced by farmers in accessing liquid fossil fuels and electricity.

The new VW tractor is part of the GenFarm Project, a comprehensive initiative focused on electrifying farming machinery to be utilized across rural Africa. The objective is to provide sustainable and reliable equipment to enhance agricultural productivity in the region.

Martina Biene, Chairperson and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Africa, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and providing mobility solutions to both urban and rural communities. The GenFarm Project aligns with Volkswagen Group’s strategy of creating value for society and the environment through sustainable mobility.

The GenFarm project, in collaboration with the Rwandan government, aims to offer mobility services for transporting goods and people. The electric motor in the Volkswagen tractors generates 20 kW, equivalent to approximately 27 horsepower, with power supplied by a 32 kWh swappable battery. The batteries are easily swapped or charged at the Empowerment Hub to minimize downtime, although DC fast charging is not currently available.

The introduction of the VW electric tractor is expected to revolutionize Rwanda’s agricultural sector, which contributes significantly to the national Gross Domestic Product. By incorporating clean and efficient technology, the GenFarm project seeks to enhance agricultural practices and promote sustainability in the region.

On a global scale, the agricultural industry is facing challenges in attracting new farmers, with the issue being prevalent in various countries. The introduction of innovative products like the electric tractor from VW offers a solution by making farming more eco-friendly, quieter, and potentially more appealing to the younger generation entering the workforce.
