WeRide begins offering robotaxis on Uber in UAE

Chinese autonomous driving technology company WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD) has made a significant stride by offering robotaxi services on Uber Technologies’ (NYSE: UBER) platform in the United Arab Emirates. This partnership, established in late September, has now resulted in WeRide’s robotaxis becoming available on Uber’s ride-hailing software in Abu Dhabi, marking a historic moment as Uber launches autonomous vehicles outside the US for the first time.

The collaboration has been backed by the Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Mobility, and UAE-based transportation company Tawasul Transport, which will serve as the fleet operator for this innovative service. Effective immediately, Uber users in Abu Dhabi can now potentially be matched with WeRide’s robotaxis when utilizing the UberX or Uber Comfort services.

Initially, the services will cover key areas of Abu Dhabi, including Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and routes to and from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport. The fleet of autonomous vehicles will be equipped with safety officers during the initial phase of operation, ensuring a smooth and secure experience for passengers.

Looking ahead, WeRide and Uber plan to commercialize fully unmanned robotaxi operations in the UAE by 2025, showcasing their long-term commitment to advancing autonomous transportation solutions. It is worth noting that this partnership excludes the US and Chinese markets, emphasizing a strategic focus on expanding autonomous vehicle services in new territories.

WeRide, founded in 2017, is a pioneering company in China specializing in high-level intelligent driving solutions. With its recent Nasdaq listing on October 25, the company has expanded its operations to 30 cities in seven countries, holding autonomous driving test licenses in four countries simultaneously – China, the US, the UAE, and Singapore.

Having received approval to test and operate autonomous vehicles on public roads in the UAE in July 2023, WeRide has been at the forefront of autonomous driving technology deployment in the region. Prior to the partnership with Uber, WeRide operated the largest fleet of robotaxis in the UAE through the TXAI App, catering to the local residents’ transportation needs.

As the collaboration between WeRide and Uber continues to evolve, the integration of robotaxis into Uber’s platform in Abu Dhabi signifies a significant milestone in the global adoption of autonomous vehicle technology. With plans to expand coverage and services in the coming years, the partnership aims to revolutionize the transportation industry and enhance the overall mobility experience for users in the UAE.
