Baidu has recently teamed up with Lyft, a prominent US ride-hailing company, to bring robotaxis to Europe. This collaboration follows Baidu’s earlier partnership announcement with Uber Technologies, showcasing the Chinese tech giant’s commitment to expanding its autonomous vehicle services globally.
According to a statement released by Baidu, Lyft will utilize Baidu Apollo Go autonomous vehicles on its platform to introduce autonomous ride-hailing services in key European markets. The initial phase of deployment is scheduled for 2026 in Germany and the UK, with plans to scale up the fleet to encompass thousands of vehicles across Europe in the years to come, pending regulatory approvals.
As part of the agreement, Lyft will leverage Baidu Apollo Go’s latest sixth-generation vehicles as the primary autonomous solution in Europe. David Risher, CEO of Lyft, emphasized the partnership’s focus on enhancing the customer experience by integrating the safety, reliability, and privacy benefits of autonomous vehicles into the European market.
Baidu’s foray into autonomous driving technology dates back to 2013, positioning the company as a pioneer in this field in China. The Apollo Go service has garnered over 11 million rides as of May and expanded its operations to 15 cities, as reported in Baidu’s Q1 earnings. During a financial report conference call in May, Baidu’s co-founder and CEO, Robin Li, revealed that the global fleet of Apollo Go robotaxis had reached 1,000 vehicles.
In a strategic move announced on July 15, Baidu unveiled a multi-year partnership with Uber to deploy a substantial number of Baidu Apollo Go robotaxis on Uber’s platform across various international markets. The initial rollout is slated for later this year in Asia and the Middle East, featuring the latest iteration of the Apollo Go robotaxis.
By collaborating with Lyft, Baidu aims to establish a strong foothold in the European autonomous vehicle market and accelerate the growth of the Apollo Go business in the region. Lyft’s recent acquisition of Freenow, a prominent taxi-hailing app in Europe, further complements this partnership by expanding Lyft’s market reach to over 300 billion personal vehicle trips annually.
With Freenow operating in nine European countries and more than 180 cities, Lyft’s acquisition sets the stage for a seamless integration of autonomous ride-hailing services powered by Baidu’s cutting-edge technology. The collaboration between Baidu, Lyft, and Uber signifies a significant step towards revolutionizing the future of transportation in Europe and beyond.
