Electric truck startup OX Delivers has recently secured a massive $163 million contract to bring its electric vehicles to East Africa, aiming to expand its presence in the region and beyond. The deal, which spans multiple years, includes the establishment of a new franchise venture called OX East Africa. This venture will involve the delivery of a fleet of OX Delivers electric trucks, along with a subscription to the company’s tech platform and vehicle maintenance services. The expansion into Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania marks a significant step for OX Delivers as it seeks to bring e-mobility to the Global South.

OX Delivers’ CEO, Simon Davis, expressed excitement over the new agreement, highlighting the company’s success in Rwanda and the potential for growth in neighboring countries. The establishment of OX East Africa will allow the company to tap into the growing demand for their truck-as-a-service business and further their mission of facilitating trade across the Global South.

One of the key features of OX Delivers’ electric trucks is their simple and durable construction, making them well-suited for the challenging conditions of the Global South. The trucks are purpose-built for the region, with a 74 kWh battery providing over 90 miles of range and a payload capacity of 4,400 lbs. They are designed to be shipped on pallets and assembled at or near their final destination, offering a flexible and efficient solution for transportation needs in the region.

Despite common misconceptions about Africa being a low-tech continent, African nations are embracing e-mobility at a rapid pace, much like they did with mobile connectivity. The adoption of electric vehicles in the region is a testament to the innovative spirit of these countries and their willingness to embrace new technologies without the constraints of existing infrastructure.

The $163 million contract secured by OX Delivers represents a significant milestone for the company and underscores the potential for growth in the electric vehicle market in the Global South. With plans to expand into new markets and continue their mission of promoting sustainable transportation, OX Delivers is poised to make a lasting impact on the region’s mobility landscape.
