Perodua, Malaysia’s second national car company, unveiled its latest eMO-II battery electric vehicle (BEV) prototype at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2024). The prototype showcases refined styling with 21st-century aesthetics and Malaysian uniqueness. Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Perodua’s president and CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to building this technology from the ground up.

The eMO-II prototype represents a significant advancement from its predecessor in terms of design and features. Dato’ Sri Zainal highlighted that while the current model is a prototype, the final product will include additional features and enhancements. The company plans to launch the BEV at a price range of MYR50,000 to MYR90,000 (US$12,000-US2,000), positioning it as the most affordable BEV in the Malaysian market upon its release next year. Perodua aims to manufacture approximately 500 units of the model per month.

Development of the eMO-II began in 2023 at Perodua’s R&D center in Rawang, Selangor. Dato’ Sri Zainal acknowledged the challenges the team faced in understanding EV technology but expressed satisfaction with the progress made. He anticipates a successful launch based on the team’s ability to adhere to the project timeline.

In a competitive landscape, Malaysia’s first national car company, Proton, is set to introduce its first BEV model, the Geely-based e.MAS 7, by the end of 2024. This move reflects the industry’s shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.

As Perodua continues to innovate in the EV space, the company’s eMO-II prototype stands out as a promising addition to the electric vehicle market. With a focus on affordability, efficiency, and Malaysian-inspired design, the eMO-II is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry. Stay tuned for the official launch of this groundbreaking BEV from Perodua.
