EV Primus Ltd recently commenced the assembly of the Wuling Binguo compact battery electric vehicle (BEV) at a state-of-the-art plant in Chonburi, located east of Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city. The newly constructed facility, costing THB200m (US$6m), is a joint venture between SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) and local distributor EV Primus, boasting an initial production capacity of 10,000 units annually.
Since its introduction to the Thai market three months ago, the Binguo has garnered significant interest, with 800 orders received to date. EV Primus aims to achieve sales of over 1,000 units by the end of the year. In addition to the Binguo, the company also offers the Wuling Air mini-BEV, with combined deliveries of both models reaching 1,800 units so far.
CEO of EV Primus, Pitaya Tanadamrongsak, revealed plans to introduce six models at the plant by 2027, with two new models scheduled for release this year. He emphasized that the Binguo already boasts a regional content of 50% and aims to increase this to 60-70% by 2026.
SGMW operates a significant production facility in Indonesia, inaugurated in 2017, where 19,429 vehicles were manufactured in the first eleven months of 2024, including the Air, Cloud, and Binguo BEVs.
Thailand’s electric vehicle market has experienced exponential growth, with 59,000 BEVs sold in the first ten months of 2024. This surge follows last year’s sales of 76,000 units, a marked increase from around 10,000 units in 2022.
