Geely-owned Swedish electric car brand Polestar has recently announced the appointment of Jonas Engström as its new chief operating officer (COO). Engström brings over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry to his new role at Polestar. He initially joined the company in 2021 as the head of product and programme and was later promoted to head of operations in July 2023.
Prior to his time at Polestar, Engström held various senior leadership roles at Volvo Cars, including head of product strategy. In his new position as COO, Engström will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of Polestar’s expanding car programs and managing the company’s daily operations. He will also work closely with the newly appointed CEO, Michael Lohscheller, to implement the company’s strategic vision across the business.
Lohscheller, who joined Polestar as CEO in August 2024, has a strong background in the automotive industry, having previously served as the CEO of Stellantis-owned Opel, Vietnamese EV maker VinFast, and Nikola. In a statement, Lohscheller praised Engström’s operational competence, strategic thinking, and humble leadership, describing him as the perfect fit for the COO role.
In addition to Engström’s appointment, Polestar also recently named Philipp Römers as the head of design for the company’s upcoming models. Römers brings with him a wealth of experience from his time at Audi and Volkswagen.
Headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, Polestar is currently active in 27 global markets, including North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The company’s North American operations are based near New York City, where it has established over 30 Polestar Spaces in key electric vehicle markets.
Polestar’s lineup includes three electric vehicle models: the Polestar 2, Polestar 3, and Polestar 4, with plans to introduce two additional models, the Polestar 5 (an electric GT) and the Polestar 6 (an electric roadster) by 2026. The company is also working on the Polestar 0 project, which aims to create a climate-neutral production car by 2030.
Looking ahead, Polestar is set for further expansion in 2025, as it continues to solidify its position in the electric vehicle market. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability underscores its vision for a greener automotive future.
