Tesla tops Ford as most recalled automaker of 2024

Tesla issued a staggering 16 recalls in 2024, affecting over 5 million electric vehicles. Despite a slowdown in sales, the automaker faced a myriad of issues, from minor font size discrepancies on warning lights to more serious problems like detaching parts. This surge in recalls marked a significant shift, with Tesla surpassing Ford to claim the top spot for the highest number of recalled vehicles.

The recalls spanned across Tesla’s product line, including its popular Model Y and the controversial Cybertruck, which alone accounted for seven recalls in the year. While recalls of new vehicles with advanced technology are not uncommon, they serve as a crucial step in addressing potential safety hazards and quality issues.

In contrast, Ford, which has historically led the industry in recalls, saw a decrease in the number of vehicles recalled in 2024. With 67 recalls affecting 4.7 million vehicles, Ford addressed issues such as door trim detachment in older Explorers and problems with hybrid and turbocharged engines in models like the F-150 and Explorer. Despite facing a $165 million fine for failing to address a rearview camera recall, Ford’s overall recall numbers have shown improvement compared to previous years.

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo, followed closely behind Tesla with the second highest number of recalled vehicles. With 72 recalls affecting 4.8 million vehicles, Stellantis dealt with issues related to rearview camera malfunctions and electronic stability control systems.

Honda also issued 19 recalls in 2024, totaling 3.7 million cars. The automaker faced challenges with steering gearbox damage and ongoing airbag issues, extending beyond the Takata airbag crisis that rocked the industry in previous years.

While most major automakers recalled fewer than 2 million vehicles, the overall trend in recalls seems to be decreasing. The NHTSA’s upcoming report for 2024 is expected to show a decline in the number of recalls compared to previous years.

In conclusion, vehicle recalls are a necessary part of ensuring safety and quality in the automotive industry. Despite the challenges faced by automakers like Tesla, Ford, and Stellantis, the proactive approach to addressing issues through recalls ultimately benefits consumers and improves overall vehicle safety standards.
