Volkswagen is gearing up to unveil a compact electric crossover at the upcoming Munich motor show in September. The new model, dubbed the ID 2X, is set to be a supermini-sized alternative to the Volkswagen Polo, and will cater to the growing demand for electric SUVs.
Based on the same platform as the ID 2, the ID 2X will feature a single motor on the front axle, delivering 223bhp. It will be offered with a choice of two battery options – 38kWh and 56kWh, with the larger battery providing a range of around 280 miles. Volkswagen has also promised fast-charging capabilities, with the larger battery capable of reaching 80% capacity in just 20 minutes.
The ID 2X is expected to be competitively priced, with Volkswagen aiming to make it one of the most affordable electric SUVs on the market. With a starting price around £25,000, it will be positioned as a more accessible option for those looking to make the switch to electric vehicles.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has confirmed that the ID 2X will make its debut at the Munich motor show, alongside other entry-level electric cars from the VW Group. The new model will be produced at a new plant near Barcelona, Spain, along with its siblings – the ID 2, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq.
Design-wise, the ID 2X is described as “safe, confident, bold” by Volkswagen’s head of design, Andreas Mindt. Drawing inspiration from the clean and simplistic design cues of the ID 2 All concept, the SUV will feature a more upright silhouette, bulkier wheel arches, and a distinctive vent-style motif on the C-pillar. The overall look will be a departure from the current ID 4 and ID 5 models, signaling a new direction for Volkswagen’s design language.
