Toyota Unveils Third-Generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell System with Increased Power and Efficiency

Toyota has announced that they are currently working on a third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system that promises to deliver double the power and 20% greater efficiency without any increase in size. This new system is a significant advancement from the current stack used in the Toyota Mirai FCEV, which produces 128kW of power.

The Japanese automaker has stated that the new system is expected to be ready for launch by 2027 at the earliest. While it is primarily targeted towards Japan’s heavy-duty commercial vehicle class, which includes machines such as diggers, it will also be integrated into passenger vehicles. This suggests that Toyota may be gearing up to release a third-generation Mirai around the same time.

Since the introduction of the original model 11 years ago, Toyota has sold approximately 28,000 units of the hydrogen-fuelled Mirai. The company has also highlighted that the new fuel cell system will be twice as durable as the current one, aiming to match the longevity of its diesel combustion engines.

In addition to improved performance and durability, Toyota has revealed that the new fuel cell will be more cost-effective to produce. While specific details on cost savings have not been disclosed, Toyota is confident that the new system will be a game-changer in the hydrogen fuel cell market.

Toyota has been a strong advocate for hydrogen power within the automotive industry, emphasizing its advantages over battery electrification, such as lower weight and extended range for commercial vehicles operating in remote areas. Despite challenges related to the availability of hydrogen filling stations, Toyota remains committed to advancing hydrogen technology.

Other automakers, including Hyundai and BMW, are also investing in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Hyundai is currently working on a second iteration of its Nexo FCEV, while BMW plans to launch a range of hydrogen FCEVs starting with a next-generation X5 that will utilize Toyota fuel cells.

As the industry continues to explore alternative fuel options, Toyota’s latest advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology signal a promising future for sustainable transportation.
