Volkswagen Delays Launch of Niche Models to Focus on Core Line-up
Volkswagen is taking a strategic approach to its vehicle line-up, prioritizing the development of its core models before venturing into niche or low-volume segments. CEO Thomas Schäfer has emphasized the importance of building the “perfect fleet of vehicles” before considering new additions.
Schäfer revealed that Volkswagen is currently facing financial constraints that prevent it from taking risks on niche models that may not align with its core line-up. This decision means that models like the Arteon and T-Roc Cabriolet may not see new generations in the near future.
The challenges of introducing niche models, including concerns about sales potential and the need for significant investments, have led Volkswagen to engage in ongoing discussions about its product strategy. Schäfer stressed the importance of maintaining a “truly core” line-up, which currently includes models like the Touareg, Golf, and the ID range of electric cars.
“We have to invest in hybridization, Euro 7 compliance, and beyond,” Schäfer explained. “This requires a significant amount of resources, and we must prioritize our core models to ensure the overall health of the business before considering niche products.”
While Volkswagen remains focused on its core line-up, Schäfer hinted that the possibility of introducing niche models in the future has not been ruled out entirely. Once the financial challenges are addressed, the company may explore options for new niche vehicles.
“The core models are our primary focus, from small hatches to SUVs and station wagons,” Schäfer noted. “However, there is still room for niche models like the Scirocco and the Touran in our future plans.”
