GAC has unveiled the Aion UT hatchback, designed specifically for urban commutes, posing a threat to the Volkswagen ID.3 in the Chinese market. Set to make its official debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show on November 15, the Aion UT is part of GAC’s electric car branch, Aion, which has become the company’s top-selling brand in the rapidly growing NEV market in China.

The Aion brand has been expanding globally, with the Aion V and Aion RT already making waves in international markets. The Aion UT, previously known as the AY2, recently applied for a sales license and boasts a sleek design tailored for urban mobility. With a long wheelbase, short overhangs, flush door handles, and oval-shaped headlights, the Aion UT’s exterior styling is reminiscent of other popular electric hatchbacks like the Geely Geome Xingyuan and BYD Dolphin.

The Aion UT features a charging port in the front right fender, LED fog lights in the front bumper, blackened pillars, and separated C-shaped LED taillight units. Additionally, a large air intake and a sizeable roof spoiler add a touch of sportiness to this compact EV.

Inside, the Aion UT offers a modern interior with a large floating touchscreen, a two-spoke steering wheel with a gear shifter behind it, wireless charging pads, and cup holders in the center tunnel. The LCD instrument panel in the official drawings displays an impressive range of 600 km.

In terms of specifications, the Aion UT is a compact car with dimensions of 4270/1850/1575 mm and a wheelbase of 2750 mm. Weighing between 1510 – 1540 kg, the Aion UT is powered by a single permanent magnet synchronous e-motor delivering 100 kW (134 hp). Equipped with LFP batteries, the Aion UT offers a range of approximately 600 km and can reach a top speed of 150 km/h.

The Aion UT is expected to enter the Chinese market with a price tag of under 100,000 yuan (13,800 USD), making it a more affordable option compared to the Volkswagen ID.3 and the BYD Dolphin. With its stylish design, impressive range, and competitive pricing, the Aion UT is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market.
