2025 Kia EV9 recalled for drive power loss issue

Kia is issuing a recall for 342 EV9 electric SUVs due to a potential loss of drive power. The affected vehicles, all 2025 models, may have rear gear drive units with improperly welded motor shafts supplied by a third-party manufacturer. This defect could lead to damage to the motor shaft, resulting in decreased power delivery to the wheels.

Drivers may experience sluggish acceleration, abnormal driveline noise, and a “Check AWD/4WD” warning message on the dashboard if this issue occurs. Only dual-motor all-wheel-drive models are included in the recall, with just 4% of the vehicles estimated to be affected. The affected EV9s were manufactured at Kia’s West Point, Georgia, plant between Oct. 11, 2024, and Dec. 19, 2024.

To address the problem, Kia dealers will replace the rear gear drive unit free of charge. Owners will also be reimbursed for any related expenses they may have incurred. Owner notification letters will be sent out starting Mar. 7, and owners can contact Kia’s customer service at 800-333-4542 or visit the recall website for more information. The recall reference number is SC337.

The EV9, launched in 2024, was named the Best Car To Buy 2024 by The Car Connection for its value compared to other three-row electric SUVs. The 2025 model continues to impress, earning the title of Best SUV To Buy 2025.
