Nio gets new policy support as Shanghai to subsidize city’s swap station construction

Shanghai, a city known for its innovation and support for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, has recently announced a new policy to subsidize the construction of battery swap stations. This move comes as a significant boost for companies like Nio, which have been at the forefront of developing battery swap technology.

Starting from April 1, Shanghai will provide a 40 percent equipment investment subsidy for battery swap stations that are open to multiple brands. This subsidy will be valid for five years, aiming to encourage the growth of a more diverse and competitive battery swap market in the city.

In addition to the equipment investment subsidy, Shanghai will also offer subsidies for the power used by battery swap stations, with a cap of RMB 600 ($83) per kW for general-purpose stations and RMB 300 per kW for non-general-purpose stations. This will help offset the operational costs for operators and incentivize the adoption of battery swap technology.

Furthermore, Shanghai will provide subsidies for cab drivers using battery swap-enabled vehicles, up to RMB 200 per month. This initiative is aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles in the transportation sector and reducing emissions in the city.

This announcement from Shanghai follows a similar move by Hefei, another city in China that recently offered exclusive purchase subsidies for battery swap-enabled models. The growing support from local governments is a positive sign for companies like Nio, which have been investing heavily in battery swap technology.

Nio, a leading EV maker with its global headquarters in Shanghai, has been a pioneer in the battery swap sector. The company currently operates over 3,000 battery swap stations across China, with Shanghai having the highest number of stations.

With the support from the Shanghai government, Nio and other EV companies are expected to accelerate the development and deployment of battery swap technology. This will not only benefit consumers by providing a convenient and efficient way to recharge their vehicles but also contribute to the overall growth of the EV industry.

Overall, the subsidies provided by Shanghai for battery swap stations will play a crucial role in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing the carbon footprint of transportation in the city. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility and its willingness to support innovative solutions in the EV sector.
