Audi’s new MHEV plus hybrid system in detail

Hybrids have always been viewed as a transitional technology between traditional combustion engines and fully electric vehicles. However, modern hybrids offer a host of advantages that make them a compelling choice for consumers. One such advancement is the introduction of plug-in hybrids, which combine the best features of both combustion engines and electric motors, effectively mitigating the drawbacks of each.

Audi recently unveiled its innovative MHEV plus system, which is designed to transform a mild hybrid into a full hybrid. This technology, which is currently available in the new A5 and Q5 models based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), aims to not only improve efficiency but also enhance the overall driving experience. By integrating a 48-volt battery, a powertrain generator (PTG), and a belt starter generator (BSG), the MHEV plus system provides electric support to the combustion engine, reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing vehicle agility.

One of the standout features of the MHEV plus system is the powertrain generator, which delivers up to 24 PS of electric power and 230 Nm of torque. This additional power aids in improving efficiency, especially during acceleration and stop-and-go traffic. The PTG operates up to a speed of 87 mph before decoupling from the drivetrain, contributing to energy recuperation and reducing fuel consumption.

The system’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with a capacity of 1.7 kWh, stores energy recovered through braking and deceleration, providing extra power when needed. A water-cooling circuit ensures optimal battery performance across different temperature ranges, with minimal impact on the vehicle’s weight.

In practical terms, the MHEV plus system not only enhances efficiency but also elevates comfort levels for drivers. The belt starter generator facilitates quiet engine starts and aids in energy supply to the battery. Additionally, the system enables features like “electric sailing” and emission-free driving during low-speed maneuvers, further reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The integration of PTG, BSG, and the 48-volt battery results in a significant increase in efficiency for Audi’s A5 and Q5 models. The 2.0-litre TDI variant of the A5 achieves reductions of up to 10 grams of CO2 per kilometer and 0.38 liters of fuel per 100 km, while the 3.0-litre TFSI version of the Q5 sees savings of up to 17 grams of CO2 per kilometer and 0.74 liters of fuel per 100 km.

With the introduction of the MHEV plus technology, Audi is not only focusing on improving fleet fuel consumption but also enhancing individual driving dynamics. The system’s sophisticated operating strategy ensures a balance between power output and energy recovery based on driving modes, ultimately leading to a more responsive and agile driving experience.

In conclusion, Audi’s MHEV plus system represents a significant step forward in hybrid technology, offering a blend of efficiency, performance, and comfort. This innovative approach not only benefits the environment by reducing emissions and fuel consumption but also enhances the overall driving experience for consumers. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, advancements like the MHEV plus system pave the way for a more sustainable and enjoyable driving future.
