Blue Bird, a well-known American school bus manufacturer and a major player in the electric school bus industry, has recently unveiled an all-electric medium duty Class 5-6 truck chassis. This marks a significant expansion for the company, which has been primarily focused on school buses since it began building its own chassis in 1952.
The new electric truck chassis is designed for class 5-6 step vans, a segment that has been gaining popularity among manufacturers and startups looking to electrify commercial vehicles. Blue Bird is confident that its reputation as a respected manufacturer will allow it to compete effectively in this crowded space.
At the recent ACT Expo, the largest commercial EV show in America, Blue Bird showcased its new electric truck chassis. In addition to the all-electric version, the company is also offering a propane-powered option, although the focus remains on electric vehicles.
The electric step van features a 23,000lb GVWR and is equipped with a 140kWh battery, providing up to 130 miles of range. The use of an LFP battery, known for its durability and cost benefits, sets this vehicle apart from others in the market. This range is suitable for a variety of applications such as bakery trucks, flower deliveries, and food trucks that operate within specific routes or cities.
For quick charging, the truck is capable of charging in about an hour on a DC charger, while an AC charge will take approximately 12 hours. Blue Bird has incorporated safety and convenience features such as hill hold and electric creep, as well as a best-in-class 55º wheel cut for tighter turns, reducing the risk of accidents during reversing maneuvers.
The company plans to begin shipping its electric step van in the first quarter of 2026. With a focus on quality, innovation, and driver convenience, Blue Bird aims to establish itself as a leading provider of electric commercial vehicles in the evolving transportation industry.
