Brat winter: Subaru MV vs left-field Landie rivals in 1982 showdown

The Jeep Laredo (CJ-7) was put to the test on the farm, showcasing its impressive performance on rough terrain. It effortlessly navigated through the test field and tackled steep inclines with ease. The automatic transmission made it a breeze to drive, making it a top choice for those looking for a reliable towing vehicle.

However, the Jeep fell short when it came to starting in thick mud at the base of a steep hill. Its relatively small load area also posed a challenge for farm use, requiring the removal of the rear-mounted spare wheel to access the towbar. Despite these drawbacks, the Jeep Laredo’s price point of £8499 made it a viable option for those seeking a balance between style and functionality.

On the other hand, the Portaro Pampas, a Portuguese version of the ARO 24, emerged as a strong contender among farmers. Despite concerns about its rusty steel bodywork, farmers were impressed by its comfortable seats, smooth ride, and impressive torque from the Daihatsu diesel engine. The ample load space of the Portaro Pampas made it a practical choice for transporting livestock and hay bales.

For those looking for a more car-like driving experience, the Subaru MV (Brat) pick-up proved to be a standout option. Derived from a car platform, the Subaru MV offered a comfortable ride and impressive performance in muddy conditions. Despite its lower ground clearance and standard tires, its lightweight construction and powerful 79bhp engine allowed it to navigate challenging terrain with ease.

In conclusion, each vehicle had its strengths and weaknesses when it came to farm use. The Jeep Laredo excelled in towing and ease of driving, while the Portaro Pampas stood out for its comfort and load capacity. The Subaru MV impressed with its car-like driving experience and off-road capabilities. Ultimately, the choice between these vehicles would depend on individual preferences and specific farm requirements.
