BYD insists rapid EV growth can’t be stopped, even without grants

BYD, the global leader in electric vehicles (EVs), is making significant strides in the industry’s fastest-growing car segments by introducing new electric cars. Despite being excluded from the UK’s Electric Car Grant, which offers discounts of up to £3,750 ($5,000) on new EV purchases, BYD remains optimistic about its EV sales growth in Europe and the UK.

The Electric Car Grant in the UK provides savings on new electric vehicles based on the sustainability of their manufacturing process. Chinese automakers, including BYD, have been excluded from the grant due to the energy used in producing their vehicles. However, BYD’s executive vice president, Stella Li, believes that this exclusion will not hinder the company’s rapid growth in EV sales in the UK.

In response to being excluded from the grant, BYD has introduced its own savings initiative to incentivize customers to choose electric vehicles. The company is offering five years of free maintenance on new EV purchases, including models like the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, and Atto 3. Additionally, BYD has extended its battery warranty to eight years and 200,000 km (155,342 miles) across its entire lineup of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Despite the challenges posed by the exclusion from the Electric Car Grant, BYD is rolling out a range of new electric vehicles to cater to various segments, including entry-level, midsize crossover SUVs, luxury models, and more. The Dolphin Surf, BYD’s cheapest electric car starting at just 18,650 GBP ($25,000), is one of the most affordable EVs in the market, even without the grant.

BYD’s expanding EV lineup includes models like the Dolphin and Atto 3, as well as the recently launched Sealion 7 midsize electric SUV. With nearly 25,000 vehicles sold in the UK in the first eight months of 2025, BYD is outpacing major brands like Honda and Mazda and closing in on Tesla in terms of sales.

With several new models in the pipeline, BYD is poised for continued growth in EV sales in the UK and Europe, demonstrating its commitment to providing lasting value and assurance to customers. Despite the lack of government support, BYD’s innovative approach and expanding lineup position it as a key player in the EV market.
