BYD, a prominent Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, has introduced its hybrid pickup truck, the Shark, in Pakistan in collaboration with Mega Motor Company (MMC). The model, locally named BYD Shark 6, was unveiled in Karachi on July 25, becoming the first hybrid pickup truck available in Pakistan. Priced at 19,950,000 Pakistani Rupees ($70,420), the Shark is equipped with BYD’s innovative DMO technology, highlighting its off-road capabilities and dual mode functionality.
Liu Xue Liang, the general manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific automotive sales division, emphasized that the launch of the Shark in Pakistan marks a significant milestone for BYD in the country’s new energy pickup truck market. The company’s commitment to promoting global green mobility through Chinese products is evident in this latest offering.
This isn’t BYD’s first foray into the Pakistani market, as the company previously introduced three models on August 17, 2024: the all-electric Atto 3, the Seal EV, and the hybrid Sealion 6. While the Atto 3 is known as the Yuan Plus in China, the Sealion 6 is referred to as the Song Plus DM-i. It’s worth noting that the Sealion 6 is currently not listed on the MMC website.
BYD’s expansion into Pakistan aligns with its broader strategy of global market penetration. The company has introduced the Shark model in various countries, including Mexico, Brazil, Cambodia, Australia, and Peru. Additionally, BYD is establishing a NEV factory near Karachi, underscoring its long-term commitment to the Pakistani market.
Looking ahead, BYD is gearing up to launch its first electric vehicle assembled in Pakistan in July or August 2026. The company plans to operate the factory on a double-shift schedule with an annual production capacity of 25,000 units. Danish Khaliq, BYD Pakistan’s vice president of sales and strategy, provided insights into the company’s ambitious plans for local manufacturing and assembly in Pakistan.
With BYD’s ongoing efforts to enhance its presence in Pakistan’s automotive sector, the introduction of the Shark hybrid pickup truck signals a promising future for sustainable mobility in the country. The company’s focus on green technology and electric vehicles underscores its commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the global automotive industry.
