BYD Sets Record in Japan with Sealion 7 Electric SUV Sales

BYD, a leading Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, achieved a significant milestone in the Japanese market by registering a record-breaking 416 vehicles in May. Over 240 of these vehicles were the newly launched Sealion 7 electric SUV, which played a pivotal role in boosting consumer awareness of the BYD brand and driving visits to dealerships.

The Sealion 7, known as the Sealion 07 EV in China, has been well-received since its launch in April, with a cumulative registration total of about 350 units. This success has propelled BYD into the top 10 list of best-selling imported car brands in Japan, according to the Japan Automobile Importers Association ranking.

BYD made its debut in the Japanese passenger vehicle market in July 2022 and began selling vehicles there in January 2023 with the Atto 3 compact electric SUV. The Atto 3, known as the BYD Yuan Plus in China, was the company’s first model designed for the global market. Subsequent models introduced in Japan include the Dolphin compact electric vehicle in September 2023 and the Seal electric sedan in June 2024.

The record-breaking registration volume in May can be attributed to the launch effect of the Sealion 7, which has enhanced the BYD brand and increased customer visits to dealerships. Looking ahead, BYD plans to expand its product lineup in Japan by adding plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models by the end of the year and launching lightweight battery electric vehicle (BEV) models in the second half of 2026.

BYD’s commitment to the Japanese market aligns with its broader strategy of strengthening its presence in overseas markets. Company chairman Wang Chuanfu has expressed confidence in achieving strong overseas sales this year, citing the stability of BYD’s prices in international markets as a key factor driving profitability.

As BYD continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, the company is poised to further solidify its position as a leading player in the global electric vehicle market. The success of the Sealion 7 in Japan underscores BYD’s ability to deliver high-quality, innovative electric vehicles that resonate with consumers worldwide.
