BYD reportedly preparing for renewed push in India, eyeing rollout of Atto 2 SUV early next year

BYD is ramping up its efforts in the Indian market, with plans to launch its Atto 2 SUV early next year despite challenges posed by local taxes on imported vehicles. The company is making headway in securing visas for its executives to visit India, marking a significant step in its strategy to expand its presence in the country.

The Atto 2, which will be priced competitively below the 2-million-rupee threshold, is set to become BYD’s most affordable offering in India. This move is in line with the company’s aim to directly compete with local automakers like Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors in the mass-market segment.

Despite India’s 70 percent import duty on vehicles, BYD is determined to position the Atto 2 as an attractive option for Indian consumers. The company is also exploring avenues to obtain regulatory approval for importing vehicles beyond the current annual quota, signaling its commitment to tapping into the Indian passenger vehicle market.

The easing of travel restrictions between China and India has paved the way for BYD’s India Managing Director to visit the country and assess the company’s operations on the ground. This visit will involve meetings with government officials in New Delhi and a tour of BYD’s passenger vehicle plant, underscoring BYD’s strategic focus on evaluating market conditions and exploring growth opportunities in India.

While discussions on battery pack assembly may be on the agenda for future visits, the immediate priority for BYD is to gain insights into the Indian market landscape and assess the feasibility of expanding its market share. The company’s recent milestone of delivering its 10,000th vehicle in India reflects its commitment to establishing a stronger foothold in the country.

The thaw in Sino-Indian relations, highlighted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to China, sets a positive tone for BYD’s renewed push in India. With a portfolio of electric vehicles already launched in the country, including the eMax 7, Seal, Atto 3, and Sealion 7, BYD is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions in India.

Overall, BYD’s strategic initiatives in India underscore its long-term commitment to the market and its determination to offer innovative electric vehicles that cater to the diverse needs of Indian consumers. As the company gears up to introduce the Atto 2 SUV and explore new opportunities for growth, its presence in India is set to make a significant impact on the country’s evolving automotive landscape.
