BYD to nearly triple its dealer network in South Africa by 2026

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) is set to significantly expand its dealer network in South Africa, aiming to capture a larger market share in Africa’s largest automotive market. The company plans to increase the number of dealerships in the region to 20 by the end of this year, with further plans to reach 30 to 35 stores by 2026.

Steve Chang, General Manager of BYD South Africa, revealed these expansion plans in an interview with Reuters. He emphasized the company’s commitment to growing its presence in South Africa and providing consumers with greater access to BYD’s lineup of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Currently, BYD offers six models in South Africa, including six battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and two hybrid models. These models cater to a range of preferences, from SUVs like the Sealion 7 and the Atto 3 to sedans like the Seal and compact cars like the Dolphin. The hybrid offerings include the Shark 6 pickup truck and the Sealion 6 SUV.

Despite the growing interest in electric vehicles globally, South Africa’s adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs) remains relatively low compared to countries like China, where NEVs account for half of new vehicle sales. In 2024, NEV sales in South Africa saw a significant increase to 15,611 units, up from 7,782 units in 2023, according to data from NAAMSA.

Chang highlighted the importance of educating and cultivating the South African market to keep pace with global trends in electric vehicle adoption. However, challenges such as limited charging infrastructure, an unstable power supply, and high import tariffs on electric vehicles pose obstacles to widespread adoption in the region.

BYD’s commitment to expanding its dealer network aligns with the company’s overall growth strategy. In May, BYD reported strong sales figures, with a total of 382,476 vehicles sold, marking a 15.27% year-on-year increase. Overseas sales of NEVs also saw significant growth, reaching 89,047 units in May, a 137.46% year-on-year increase and the sixth consecutive month of record-breaking sales.

As BYD continues to expand its presence in South Africa and other international markets, the company remains focused on driving innovation in the electric vehicle industry and contributing to the global transition towards sustainable transportation.
