BYD Ventures into Humanoid Robotics: A New Frontier in AI Technology

BYD, a leading Chinese automaker, recently made a groundbreaking announcement by venturing into the field of humanoid robotics. The company has officially launched a global recruitment drive for its Embodied Intelligence Research Team, targeting master’s and doctoral graduates from the class of 2025 at renowned universities worldwide. The roles offered by BYD include Senior Algorithm Engineers, Senior Structural Engineers, and Senior Simulation Engineers, with a focus on cutting-edge research in humanoid and bipedal robotics.

The Embodied Intelligence Research Team at BYD leverages the company’s extensive experience in industrial applications to customize robotic systems and enhance their capabilities. The team has already developed a range of advanced robotic products, including industrial, collaborative, mobile, and humanoid robots. By concentrating on improving robotic perception and decision-making, BYD aims to accelerate the integration of embodied intelligence in industrial settings.

This strategic move aligns with BYD’s broader vision of merging artificial intelligence with automotive technologies. During the company’s 30th-anniversary celebration, which coincided with the rollout of its ten millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu revealed plans to invest 100 billion yuan (approximately 13.73 billion USD) into AI-driven innovations. This substantial investment is intended to drive comprehensive upgrades in vehicle intelligence.

BYD’s early investment in Ubtech Robotics has already yielded results, with the deployment of Ubtech’s industrial humanoid robot, Walker S1, in its manufacturing facilities. Standing at 1.72 meters tall and weighing 76 kilograms, Walker S1 has the capability to carry up to 15 kilograms while working alongside uncrewed logistics vehicles and automated systems. This collaboration between humanoid robots and autonomous logistics vehicles represents a significant advancement towards large-scale uncrewed operations.

Ubtech Robotics, a key player in the humanoid robotics industry, has established partnerships with several automakers, including Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor, Geely, FAW Hongqi, and Audi FAW. The company’s Walker S series of humanoid robots has garnered over 500 pre-orders, positioning them as the most extensively trained robots in car factories for tasks such as inspections, quality checks, and label applications.

Beyond the automotive sector, Ubtech has also collaborated with industry giants like Foxconn and SF Express to expand the applications of its robots in manufacturing. This strategic partnership underscores the growing significance of humanoid robotics in revolutionizing industrial processes and driving innovation across various sectors.

In conclusion, BYD’s foray into humanoid robotics signifies a bold step towards the future of AI technology. With a dedicated focus on embodied intelligence and a strong commitment to innovation, BYD is poised to make significant strides in reshaping the landscape of industrial robotics.
