Chery Automobile has officially started production of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Jaecoo J7 SUV in Malaysia. The company’s local subsidiary, Chery Auto Malaysia Sdn Bhd, kicked off production of the 1.6L internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the J7 last June at the Chery Corporate Malaysia Factory in Shah Alam.
The vice president of Jaecoo Malaysia, Emily Lek, expressed excitement about the development, stating, “As Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem continues to evolve, Jaecoo is pleased to offer consumers greater peace of mind when considering the shift to hybrid energy mobility.”
Jaecoo Malaysia claims that the J7 PHEV boasts a “class-leading” pure electric range of 106 km and consumes just under 6 litres of petrol per 100 km when running on depleted power. In a recent long-distance test drive, the J7 PHEV covered over 1,200 km on a full tank of petrol and a fully charged battery.
The launch of the production of J7 at Shah Alam in June 2024 signifies a significant milestone for Chery Automobile as it expands its presence in the Malaysian market. With the increasing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, the introduction of the J7 PHEV is a strategic move by the company to cater to the evolving needs of consumers.
