Chery, a prominent Chinese automotive company, is making waves in the industry by claiming to establish the world’s first GWh-level all-solid-state battery production line in Wuhu, Anhui Province. This groundbreaking initiative is set to revolutionize the way batteries are manufactured and utilized in electric vehicles.
The Anhui Daily recently reported that containers of equipment were delivered to the factory site in the Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone on November 18. This marks the beginning of a new era in battery technology, with Chery at the forefront of innovation.
The project, developed in collaboration with Anhui Anwa New Energy Co., Ltd., covers 150 mu (100,000 square meters) in its first phase. This solid-state battery industrial park will house a 5 GWh solid-state battery R&D center and a state-of-the-art automated production line. With a design capacity of 1.25 GWh, the production line is set to be the world’s first GWh-level new solid-state battery production line.
Gao Lixin, the general manager of Anhui Anwa New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., highlighted the advantages of solid-state batteries over traditional ones. These batteries are safer, more environmentally friendly, and offer significantly improved energy density. This technological leap forward is poised to drive the electric vehicle industry to new heights.
The production line is expected to commence operations in the coming months, with the first-generation solid-state battery boasting an energy density exceeding 280 Wh/kg. Subsequent generations, set to launch in 2025 and 2027, will further enhance energy density to over 400 Wh/kg and 500 Wh/kg, respectively.
Anwa has streamlined the battery production process, reducing it from 11 steps to just 5. This innovative approach eliminates several traditional processes, resulting in a 30% reduction in fixed asset investment and a 20% decrease in energy consumption during manufacturing.
If Chery succeeds in being the first company to operate such a production line, it could have a significant impact on the industry. Major automakers and battery producers are already investing heavily in solid-state battery technology, recognizing its potential to transform the market.
Chery had previously announced plans for solid-state batteries and unveiled a wagon concept equipped with this cutting-edge technology. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in its strategic initiatives.
With sources citing Fast Technology and Anhui Daily, the future looks promising for Chery as it paves the way for the next generation of electric vehicles powered by advanced solid-state batteries.
