China continues to drive the global battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) markets, with new figures from EV Volumes showcasing the top models leading the way in January 2025.
According to EV Volumes, the global BEV market saw a 21% year-on-year increase, with 790,842 units hitting the roads in January. PHEV deliveries also saw a 24% increase, totaling 512,486 units. China emerged as the leader in the EV market, surpassing the US in both BEV and PHEV volumes.
In terms of market share, China dominated the PHEV sector with 73.1%, while the US only accounted for 4.5% of registrations. Germany, the UK, and Japan followed with 3.4%, 2.4%, and 1.3% respectively. The BEV sector also saw China leading with 53.6% market share, followed by the US, Germany, the UK, and France.
The Tesla Model Y secured the top spot in the global BEV market with 63,615 units sold in January. Despite a 9.6% decrease compared to the previous year, the Model Y maintained an 8% market share. Tesla, however, faced challenges including stock value fluctuations and withdrawal of incentives in Toronto.

Among the top 10 BEV models, the European carmaker Volkswagen’s ID.4 was the only one to make the list. With 13,416 registrations, the ID.4 secured a 1.7% market share, showing significant success in the US market compared to Germany.
On the PHEV front, BYD dominated with seven models in the top 10 slots. The BYD Song Plus led the market with 25,123 deliveries, followed by the BYD Song Pro and Galaxy Starship 7. The global PHEV market showcased BYD’s stronghold, with models like the Qin L and Qin Plus also making the top rankings.
With China’s continued dominance in the EV market, the global landscape is evolving rapidly with new models from both established and emerging players making their mark. As the shift towards electric mobility accelerates, it will be interesting to see how different regions and manufacturers adapt to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles.
