Chinese Car Makers Dominate UK Plug-in Hybrid Market
Chinese car makers have made a significant impact on the UK plug-in hybrid market, breaking the dominance of Volkswagen, Ford, and other premium brands. In May, the top two positions were claimed by Chinese vehicles, signaling a shift in consumer preferences.
The BYD Seal U emerged as the top-selling plug-in hybrid with 1576 units sold, followed closely by the Jaecoo 7 with 1346 sales. This success has caught the industry by surprise, as traditional players like Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Kuga, and Range Rover Sport were pushed down the rankings.
These developments in the UK market mirror a larger trend across Europe, where Chinese plug-in hybrid sales have skyrocketed by 421% to 30,400 units in the first four months of the year. This surge has given Chinese car makers an 8.3% market share in Europe, indicating their growing presence and competitiveness.
