Continental’s New Tire Has Golf Ball Skin

Continental has recently unveiled its latest innovation in tire technology with the EcoContact 7 and EcoContact 7 S tires. These tires are designed with efficiency in mind, incorporating unique features to enhance performance and sustainability.

One of the most intriguing aspects of these tires is the use of Aerodimples, inspired by the dimples on golf balls. These tiny dimples are strategically placed around the sidewall and tread of the tires to reduce air turbulence and improve aerodynamic performance. This innovative design feature allows the tires to roll more efficiently and use less energy, benefiting both electric and combustion-powered vehicles.

In addition to the Aerodimples, Continental has developed a new Green Chili 3.0 rubber tread compound for these tires. This compound is specifically designed for low rolling resistance, contributing to better fuel efficiency. The EcoContact 7 S variant is further optimized for sport performance, with enhanced grip and handling characteristics, especially in wet conditions.

The inner sections of the tires utilize Smart Energy Casing technology to reduce friction and improve overall efficiency. The tread design also plays a key role in reducing rolling resistance and road noise, making these tires ideal for electric vehicles where range is a priority.

In terms of performance, the EcoContact 7 and 7 S tires have received top ratings in the European Union for rolling resistance, wet braking, and road noise. While they are classified as summer-only tires, they have already been approved for use by top automakers like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BYD.

It remains to be seen if Continental will introduce these tires in North America, but given their success in Europe, it’s a possibility. The EcoContact 7 and 7 S tires are paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in tire technology, catering to the needs of eco-conscious drivers and electric vehicle owners.
