Dacia Bigster Review 2025, Price & Specs

Exploring the Performance of the Dacia Bigster’s Full-Hybrid Powertrain

When it comes to being on the move, the Dacia Bigster’s full-hybrid powertrain offers a different experience compared to its predecessor, the Duster. While the mild-hybrid versions have not been tested yet, the larger 1.8-litre engine in the Bigster is noticeably smoother and more refined. Although it may not be the top choice for enthusiasts, it does provide a more assured driving experience.

Although the engine may still feel coarse under heavy throttle, the low-load acceleration is smooth and responsive. The ability of the powertrain to seamlessly transition into all-electric mode is impressive, making for a relatively quiet and inoffensive driving experience.

Despite its size, the Bigster’s brakes are effective, bringing the car to a stop quickly thanks to its relatively low curb weight of 1419kg. This weight advantage over competitors like the Ford Kuga and Kia Sportage contributes to the Bigster’s ability to achieve decent performance levels with ease, especially with lighter loads.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Bigster is its innovative powertrain. The full-hybrid model features Renault’s E-Tech system, which includes two electric motors, a clutchless four-speed gearbox, and the new 1.8-litre petrol engine from Dacia. This setup, initially prototyped in Lego, allows for seamless integration of electric and petrol power sources.

One unique feature of the system is its ability to have the electric motor drive the wheels while the engine provides power to the gearbox, creating a compact and efficient drivetrain. Despite its complexity, the E-Tech system feels more natural than traditional e-CVT setups and always starts in electric mode, drawing power from a 1.8kWh battery pack located under the boot floor.

Overall, the Dacia Bigster’s full-hybrid powertrain offers a blend of performance and efficiency that sets it apart in the crossover segment. With its smooth acceleration, innovative technology, and impressive energy management, it proves to be a capable and intriguing option for drivers looking for a balance between power and eco-friendliness.
