In November 2024, the European market saw a surge in Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, reaching a record high of 185,522 units. This marked a 0.7% increase compared to the previous year. On the other hand, Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) volumes experienced a significant decline of 7.5%, with only 84,147 registrations.

Throughout the year, BEVs saw a slight drop of 1.2%, totaling 1.79 million deliveries. Despite this decrease, the technology showed growth in seven out of the eleven months from January to November. This left BEVs with a gap of about 21,800 units compared to the same period in 2023.

PHEVs also faced challenges, falling by 4.3% in registrations from January to November, totaling 865,993 units. The drivetrain saw a continuous decline for seven months following a brief period of growth from January to April.

The top-selling BEV in November was the Tesla Model Y, although it experienced a 2.1% decline in registrations compared to the previous year. It captured a 9.6% market share in the month. The Skoda Enyaq followed closely in second place, with a 14.4% increase in registrations year on year. The model is set to receive a major update soon, enhancing its appeal in the market.

Tesla’s Model 3 experienced a significant drop of 54.8% in registrations in November, while the Volkswagen ID.4 saw a 7.3% increase compared to the previous year. Other notable models in the top rankings included the Volvo EX30, Audi Q4 e-Tron, and VW ID.7, all making significant contributions to the BEV market.

Looking at the year-to-date figures, the Tesla Model Y maintained its position as the best-selling BEV, although it saw a 20.9% decrease compared to the previous year. The Tesla Model 3 held the second spot, with an 11.9% increase in volumes year on year. The competition between Volvo’s EX30 and Skoda Enyaq for the third position remained tight, with both models showing positive growth.

In the PHEV segment, the Volvo XC60 emerged as the top-selling model in November, followed by the VW Tiguan and BMW X1. The Mercedes-Benz EQA also showed strong performance, gaining momentum in the market.

Overall, the European automotive market witnessed fluctuations in BEV and PHEV registrations throughout the year, highlighting the shifting trends and preferences among consumers. With new model refreshes and updates on the horizon, the competition in the electric vehicle market is expected to intensify in the coming months.
