French motorways show us how it should be done

Exploring France’s Smooth and Serene Motorway Network

France, our next-door neighbours, boast a remarkable 7383 miles of smooth, free-flowing highways that connect the picturesque countryside to bustling towns. Their inter-urban road transportation system provides valuable lessons for other countries to learn from.

Did you know that France’s first motorway, the A13, was opened in 1941? This highway was the result of a two-decade-long study aimed at creating a ‘highway to the west’ connecting Paris with Normandy. The success of this project led to the rapid expansion of the French motorway network, with toll roads becoming a common sight across the country from the early 1960s.

One of the reasons behind the smooth operation of France’s motorway network is the presence of tolls. These tolls are necessary as the system is owned by government-mandated private companies. While tolls may seem like an inconvenience, they play a significant role in maintaining the high standards of the roads.

Compared to the UK, motorway traffic volumes in France are significantly lower, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring a more relaxed journey. The higher speed limit of 130kph (81mph) also contributes to a faster and safer travel experience.

One of the most noticeable differences between French and UK roads is the quality of maintenance. French roads are meticulously cared for, resulting in a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience. In contrast, the UK’s wet climate and less rigorous upkeep schedule often lead to potholes and rough roads.

While the tolls in France may seem steep, the benefits of a comfortable and efficient journey outweigh the cost. For example, a 662-mile journey from Calais to Marseille and back may cost €85 (£71) in tolls, but the time saved and the pleasant driving experience make it worthwhile.

Next time you travel through France, take a moment to appreciate the well-maintained motorways and the serene driving experience they offer. It’s a stark contrast to the bumpy roads of the UK, and a testament to the importance of investing in infrastructure for a smoother and safer journey.
