Xpeng, a prominent electric vehicle (EV) maker, is gearing up to introduce its own in-house developed Turing AI chip, marking a significant departure from relying on Nvidia’s autonomous driving chips. The upcoming G7 SUV, scheduled to debut tomorrow, will be the first Xpeng model to feature the cutting-edge Turing AI chip, as announced by the company on Weibo.

The Turing AI chip is set to equip the G7 with enhanced AI capabilities, offering users a more powerful and efficient driving experience. Xpeng’s chairman and CEO, He Xiaopeng, recently stated that the G7 will be the first AI car to possess L3 computing power, showcasing the brand’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement in the EV sector.

Notably, the Turing chip achieved a successful tape-out on August 23, 2024, during the launch event for the Mona M03 electric sedan. Tape-out signifies the conversion of circuit designs into chips ready for mass production, following rigorous testing and validation processes. Xpeng envisions utilizing the Turing chip not only in its EVs but also in robots and flying cars, underlining its versatility and potential for diverse applications.

With a computing power equivalent to three Nvidia Orin X chips, the Turing chip boasts approximately 700 TOPS, rivaling Nvidia’s latest Thor chip. Xpeng’s strategic shift towards manufacturing its own smart driving chips positions the company as a trailblazer in the Chinese EV industry, following in the footsteps of Nio, another leading EV startup that mass-produces its smart driving chips.

The introduction of the Turing AI chip signifies a significant milestone for Xpeng, showcasing its dedication to pushing the boundaries of technological innovation in the EV landscape. By leveraging in-house developed chips, Xpeng aims to enhance the performance, efficiency, and capabilities of its vehicles, setting a new standard for smart driving technology in the market.

In addition to the Turing AI chip, Xpeng recently unveiled a heads-up display (HUD) system developed jointly with Huawei, further highlighting its commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its vehicles. The AR-HUD system is designed to display crucial information such as smart driving data, speed, and road conditions, initially featured in the upcoming G7 SUV.

As Xpeng continues to pave the way for innovation and advancement in the EV sector, the integration of the Turing AI chip and other advanced technologies underscores the brand’s relentless pursuit of excellence and leadership in the industry. With a focus on enhancing user experience, driving performance, and overall safety, Xpeng remains at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, shaping the future of smart mobility with its groundbreaking technologies and visionary approach.
