Geely Auto has once again expanded its hybrid vehicle lineup with the launch of the Galaxy L7 EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV. This new model comes just two days after the introduction of the Galaxy L6 EM-i hybrid sedan, showcasing Geely’s commitment to offering a wide range of eco-friendly vehicles to compete with rivals like BYD.
The Galaxy L7 EM-i is equipped with the fuel-efficient Leishen EM-i hybrid system, which was unveiled by Geely last October. This system aims to rival BYD’s DM-i system, known for its impressive fuel economy. The SUV is available in four variants, with prices starting at RMB 119,800 ($16,490) and going up to RMB 152,800. Customers can also enjoy a limited-time discount of RMB 4,000 on all variants if purchased before March 31.
In terms of specifications, the Galaxy L7 EM-i measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,785 mm. It is powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack with two capacity options – 18.4 kWh and 18.7 kWh, providing a CLTC battery range of 115 kilometers.
With the launch of the Galaxy L7 EM-i, Geely aims to challenge BYD’s Song Plus DM-i, a hybrid SUV with a starting price of RMB 135,800. This move comes amidst the intensifying competition between Geely and BYD, as both companies strive to increase their market share in China’s auto industry.
The Galaxy lineup was officially introduced by Geely in February 2023, targeting the mainstream plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) markets. The recent launch of two new models within a week underscores Geely’s determination to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
In 2024, BYD held the largest share of China’s auto market at 16.2 percent, with Geely following closely behind with a 7.7 percent share. However, in January 2025, Geely took the lead with 13.4 percent market share, surpassing BYD’s 11.2 percent share in retail sales.
Overall, Geely’s Galaxy L7 EM-i represents a significant step towards expanding its presence in the hybrid SUV segment and competing with established players like BYD. With its advanced hybrid system, sleek design, and competitive pricing, the Galaxy L7 EM-i is set to make a mark in the ever-growing electric vehicle market.
