Genesis GV90 coach door system revealed in new patent

Genesis is gearing up to revolutionize the luxury SUV market with its upcoming model, the GV90. The standout feature of this vehicle is its Rolls-Royce-style coach doors, which have been revealed through a new patent filing.

Initially showcased at the NY Auto Show last March, the Genesis GV90 made waves not just for its design and technology but for its unique coach doors. Despite initial doubts about whether this feature would make it to the production model, recent sightings of the GV90 in South Korea and California confirm that the coach doors will indeed be part of the final product.

The latest patent filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office shed light on how these coach doors will function. The patents, titled “Cinching Device For Door Latches in Vehicle” and “Door Latch Device for Vehicles,” detail a sophisticated system for operating the coach doors. The “Door Latch Device” utilizes a door striker on the lower side of the door, controlled by a hinge unit, allowing for a unique hinge-like movement without the need for a B-pillar for support.

Similarly, the cinching device, also attached to the door and part of the vehicle, is capable of controlling multiple units with a single device. This innovative design by Genesis enables B-pillarless coach doors to swing open seamlessly, a feature that was previously thought to be unfeasible in production vehicles.

While the Genesis GV90 is expected to offer coach doors as an option, traditional door handle variants have also been spotted during testing. The GV90 is slated for a mid-2026 launch and will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Ulsan plant in South Korea. Riding on Hyundai’s new eM platform, the flagship Genesis SUV promises a 50% improvement in driving range, alongside cutting-edge technology, software, connectivity, and Level 3 or higher autonomous driving capabilities.
