General Motors (GM) has recently inked a significant deal with Vianode, an advanced battery materials company, to secure a long-term supply of high-performance anode graphite for its electric vehicle (EV) battery production. This multi-billion dollar agreement, extending through 2033, aims to bolster the North American battery and EV supply chain.

The synthetic anode graphite produced by Vianode will be utilized by Ultium Cells LLC, GM’s joint venture with LG Energy Solution, for the manufacturing of next-generation EV batteries and drive units. The material will be sourced from Vianode’s IRA-compliant plant in North America, with production set to commence in 2027. The agreement also includes a minimum off-take commitment.

Following a rigorous multi-year qualification process, Vianode’s pilot plant in Norway has demonstrated that the anode graphite meets stringent performance and validation requirements, paving the way for this collaboration with GM.

Vianode CEO Burkhard Straube highlighted the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the performance of EVs through advanced battery materials. The establishment of Vianode North America and the partnership with GM signify crucial steps towards building a resilient local supply chain for critical battery materials outside of Asia.

Synthetic graphite, produced through high-temperature processes, has the potential to enhance battery performance significantly. Vianode, with operations in Norway and a new full-scale facility in Herøya, plans to scale up production in North America and Europe. The company aims to supply materials for up to three million EVs annually by 2030 through a substantial investment program.

GM’s global purchasing and supply chain senior vice-president, Jeff Morrison, emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement with Vianode in developing artificial graphite for sustainable battery supply chains in North America. This collaboration is poised to advance GM’s battery technology and deliver greater value to customers.

The partnership between GM and Vianode underscores the growing focus on sustainable battery materials and the importance of a robust EV supply chain. With Vianode’s expertise in advanced battery materials and GM’s commitment to innovation, the future of electric mobility looks promising.
