General Motors (GM) has emerged as a prominent player in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with Chevy now holding the title of the #2 EV brand in the US. Cadillac, on the other hand, leads the luxury EV segment. Despite facing challenges such as Trump’s tariffs, which cost the company an extra $1.1 billion in the second quarter, GM remains committed to profitable EV production.
In the second quarter of 2025, GM witnessed a significant surge in EV sales, more than doubling from the previous year. The company sold a total of 46,280 EVs in Q2, marking an 111% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Chevy, in particular, experienced impressive growth with its electric Equinox leading the pack as “America’s most affordable 315+ range EV.” This success propelled Chevy to surpass Ford and Hyundai, claiming the second spot in EV sales in the US.
Cadillac, not to be outdone, boasts a full lineup of electric SUVs and proudly holds the title of the luxury EV leader in the US. With over 25% of its sales in Q2 coming from EVs, Cadillac is making strides in the premium electric vehicle market. Even GMC is making waves in the EV space, offering models like the Sierra EV pickup and the Hummer EV pickup and SUV.
Despite facing a 35% decline in profits in Q2 2025, GM remains optimistic about the future of EVs. CEO Mary Barra emphasized that profitable electric vehicle production is the company’s “north star.” GM plans to mitigate the impact of tariffs through manufacturing adjustments and cost initiatives, reaffirming its full-year 2025 guidance.
To further solidify its position in the EV market, GM announced a $4 billion investment to shift North American production and expand its partnership with LG Energy Solution to produce lower-cost LFP EV batteries. The company is set to introduce the new Chevy Bolt EV later this year, featuring enhanced features and a longer driving range.
GM is also capitalizing on federal incentives, offering significant discounts on electric vehicles to attract customers. With the $7,500 tax credit set to expire at the end of September, now is the perfect time to explore GM’s lineup of electric vehicles. From the affordable Chevy Equinox EV to the luxurious Cadillac models, GM offers a diverse range of EV options to suit every need.
