Great Wall Motor’s GWM Tank brand recently unveiled the updated Tank 500 SUV, a significant refresh for one of its key models. The launch event for the hybrid vehicle saw a remarkable response, with 12,257 firm orders secured within just two hours of its introduction.
The Tank 500 comes with a starting price of RMB 335,000 ($46,820), which is actually lower than the pre-sales price of RMB 360,000 that was announced earlier in the month. This reduction of RMB 25,000 represents a 6.94 percent decrease in price, making the SUV even more attractive to potential buyers.
The updated Tank 500 is available in two variants of the Tank 500 Hi4-T and one variant of the Tank 500 Hi4-Z, priced at RMB 335,000, RMB 355,000, and RMB 375,000, respectively. The SUV maintains its dimensions, measuring 5,078 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.
Both the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z variants feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.0L engine with an electric motor. The engine delivers a maximum power output of 180 kW and peak torque of 380 Nm. The Hi4-T variant boasts a single electric motor with 130 kW maximum power and a combined powertrain output of 310 kW, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds.
The Tank 500 Hi4-Z, on the other hand, features dual motors with a combined system output of 635 kW, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in a swift 4.3 seconds. This variant is equipped with a 59.05-kWh ternary lithium battery pack, offering a WLTC battery range of 201 km and a combined range of 1,096 km.
In addition to these impressive features, the updated Tank 500 incorporates LiDAR technology in its higher-priced variants and integrates Great Wall Motor’s advanced Coffee Pilot Ultra driver assistance system. The system includes a sensor suite with one 128-channel LiDAR, three millimeter-wave radars, twelve ultrasonic radars, and eleven high-definition cameras, powered by Nvidia’s Orin-X AI chip.
The Tank brand also offers a gasoline-powered version of the Tank 500 with a 3.0T V6 engine, starting at RMB 355,000. The strong demand for the updated Tank 500 was evident, with 12,257 firm orders received within two hours of its launch.
Overall, the Tank brand has been performing well, with 20,020 vehicles sold in July alone, marking a 7.16 percent year-on-year increase and contributing significantly to GWM’s monthly sales. Despite a slight decrease in sales from January to July compared to the previous year, the Tank brand remains a key player in the automotive market.
