The Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer are two popular family SUVs that are often considered when looking for a vehicle with three rows of seats that still needs to fit in the garage. Both models have recently received updates, making the differences between them more pronounced.

The 2025 Honda Pilot has been refreshed with larger infotainment touchscreens, a rugged TrailSport edition, and an updated V-6 engine. On the other hand, the 2025 Ford Explorer has also received a refresh with changes to its front and rear styling, along with new trim levels.

When it comes to pricing, both the Pilot and Explorer start at around $41,000. However, fully loaded Explorer models tend to cost more than loaded Pilots. The best picks are the Honda Pilot EX-L and the Ford Explorer ST-Line.

In terms of performance, the Honda Pilot comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that provides strong performance and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. The Ford Explorer, on the other hand, offers a turbo-4 engine as standard, with the option of a more powerful turbocharged V-6 on higher trims. Both models can be equipped with all-wheel drive.

When it comes to gas mileage, the Explorer has a slight advantage over the Pilot. The turbo-4 engine in the Explorer is more fuel-efficient than the V-6 in the Pilot.

In regards to interior and cargo space, the Honda Pilot has a more spacious interior and offers more cargo space compared to the Ford Explorer. The Pilot can seat up to eight people comfortably and has a versatile cargo area that can accommodate a variety of items.

In terms of safety, both the Pilot and Explorer come well-equipped with advanced safety features. The Pilot has been awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, while the Explorer has received good scores in most IIHS tests.

Overall, the Honda Pilot edges out the Ford Explorer in terms of value, interior space, and safety features. However, the Explorer has a more upscale interior and offers a sportier driving experience. Ultimately, the choice between the two SUVs will depend on individual preferences and priorities.
