Japanese automaker Honda Motor Company has recently announced its plans to relocate its global headquarters to a new redevelopment area near Tokyo Station in the Yaesu district by 2029. This decision marks a significant shift from its previous plan of rebuilding and remaining at its current headquarters.
For the past forty years, Honda’s main global headquarters has been based in the Aoyama Building, located in Tokyo’s Minato ward. However, due to a lack of office space, the company temporarily relocated some head office operations to Toranomon, also in Minato, in May. The upcoming move to the Yaesu district will provide Honda with more floor space in a new building, allowing for the consolidation of head office operations and improving communication and working conditions for its staff.
In a strategic move, ownership of the Aoyama Building will be transferred to Mitsui Fudosan Residential Company in exchange for a portion of the new tower to be built by the same developer in the Yaesu district. Honda’s decision to relocate its global headquarters is driven by its commitment to establishing a hub for transformation and communication that fosters innovation. The company aims to be a leader in creating a workplace culture that promotes collaboration and creativity.
One of Honda’s unique in-house communication cultures is called “Waigaya,” which encourages staff to engage in lively exchanges of opinions that lead to innovative solutions. The relocation of some head office functions to Toranomon, with its open-plan office layout, has already proven to enhance communication among employees. This move aligns with Honda’s vision of being a company that society values and desires to exist in the future.
As Honda prepares for its headquarters relocation, the company remains focused on promoting innovation and driving excellence in the automotive industry. The move to the Yaesu district represents a new chapter in Honda’s journey towards creating a dynamic and collaborative work environment that will support its future growth and success.
