Huawei Launches 1.5 MW Supercharger in Race for EV Charging Power

  • Huawei has launched a supercharger with a peak charging power of 1.5 MW, as the race for charging power in China’s EV industry continues.
  • CATL yesterday unveiled its second-generation Shenxing Battery, which it said has a peak charging power of 1.3 MW.

Huawei has introduced a supercharger with a peak charging power exceeding 1 MW in the ongoing competition for charging power in the EV industry.

The Chinese technology giant unveiled the supercharger in Shanghai, boasting a peak charging power of up to 1.5 MW, positioning it as the industry’s first fully liquid-cooled MW-class supercharging solution.

While initially targeted at heavy truck applications, Huawei stated that the supercharger can also cater to passenger cars.

With the ability to deliver a charging current of up to 2400A when utilizing two charging guns simultaneously, the supercharger can charge an electric heavy truck from 10 percent to 90 percent in just 15 minutes, providing approximately 300 kWh of power – a significant enhancement over traditional fast-charging stations.

Employing immersion liquid-cooling technology, the fully liquid-cooled supercharger boasts a 10-year service life and can operate reliably in extreme temperatures ranging from -30°C to 60°C, according to Huawei.

The device is compatible with 99 percent of existing EV models, augmenting charging efficiency by 30 percent and reducing operational costs by 20 percent based on real-world testing conducted by the company.

Through strategic collaborations with companies such as SF Express and JD.com, Huawei plans to deploy the first 5,000 electric heavy trucks equipped with the MW-class supercharger.

Furthermore, Huawei has partnered with 11 vehicle manufacturers to develop over 30 heavy truck models supporting 4C supercharging for various operational scenarios like ports and mines.

Joining the league of companies announcing peak charging power exceeding 1 MW, Huawei’s move aligns with the current trend of unveiling ultra-high-power charging technology in China’s EV industry.

During its recent Tech Day event, CATL (SHE: 300750) revealed its second-generation Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery with a peak charging power of up to 1.3 MW, setting new benchmarks in ultra-fast charging performance and charging rates.

Earlier announcements from companies like Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) and BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) further underscore the industry’s focus on high-power charging solutions, with advancements in liquid-cooled chargers supporting 1.2 MW and 1 MW of power, respectively.
