Hyundai Introduces Affordable Rival for the Renault 4
Hyundai is gearing up to launch a new affordable electric vehicle to compete with the popular Renault 4 in Europe. The upcoming Bayon-sized EV, likely to be named the Ioniq 2, is part of Hyundai’s strategy to strengthen its position in the European market and closely match its sister brand, Kia, in terms of sales.
The introduction of the Ioniq 2 marks Hyundai’s entry into the growing electric hatchback segment, aiming to attract new customers to the brand. With 265,680 cars sold in Europe in the first half of 2025, Hyundai is just behind Kia in sales numbers.
The Ioniq 2 will fill the gap between Hyundai’s Inster and Kona Electric models, offering a compact electric option for consumers. The car, set to be unveiled at the Munich motor show next month, is expected to go on sale in the third quarter of 2026, with Kia’s EV2 launching shortly before.
The spy shots of the Ioniq 2 reveal a raised hatchback design with a sleek roofline, similar to the Volkswagen ID 2X. The front end is expected to feature slim LED headlights and a modern, technical look, reminiscent of the new Ioniq 6.
Hyundai Europe boss Xavier Martinet expressed excitement about the brand’s electrification efforts, stating, “We are very much involved with the electrification of our line-up and to increase our electrified mix in the coming years.”
With the Ioniq 2’s impending release, Hyundai is poised to tap into the growing demand for electric vehicles in Europe, competing with the likes of the Renault 4, Volkswagen ID 2X, and Skoda Epiq. Stay tuned for more updates on Hyundai’s latest electric offering!
