Hyundai is gearing up for the official unveiling of its highly anticipated solid-state battery pilot plant in Uiwang, with the opening ceremony scheduled for March. This cutting-edge battery, dubbed “Dream” by the company, is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry with its advancements in range, charging speed, safety, and energy density.
The journey towards developing this innovative battery began in 2023 when Hyundai first announced its ambition to lead the market in electric car batteries. The company pledged a substantial investment of €9 billion over the next decade to drive advancements in technologies such as solid-state batteries, lithium-ion batteries with various chemistries, and more.
Hyundai’s Uiwang plant is on track to commence production of the Dream batteries next month, with plans to unveil an electric prototype powered by this new technology by the end of 2025. While mass commercialization is projected for 2030, Hyundai is already forging partnerships with other companies to accelerate the development of similar technologies.
One notable collaboration is with Factorial Energy, a solid-state specialist supported by LG Chem, Mercedes, and Stellantis. This partnership aims to further enhance the capabilities of solid-state batteries and explore their application in various vehicles, including electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
As Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of battery technology, the automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions. With the promise of improved performance, efficiency, and environmental impact, Hyundai’s Dream battery represents a major milestone in the transition towards a greener future.
