IM Motors, the electric vehicle (EV) unit of SAIC Motor, is set to launch its first hybrid model, the IM LS9, a large extended-range SUV. This move reflects a broader trend among domestic EV manufacturers in China, who are increasingly diversifying their product offerings beyond battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The IM LS9, listed in the latest catalog of vehicle models awaiting approval for sale by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, marks a significant step for IM Motors. This catalog is open for public comment from July 17 to 23, with approval being the final regulatory hurdle before a vehicle can be sold in China.
Described as an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), the IM LS9 boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 5,279 mm in length, 2,000 mm in width, and 1,806 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm. Weighing in at 2,695 kilograms, this six-seat SUV features a maximum speed of 220 kilometers per hour.
Under the hood, the IM LS9 is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine from SAIC as a range extender, delivering a maximum power output of 114 kW. The SUV also features dual motors, with the front motor providing 160 kW of peak power and the rear motor delivering 230 kW of peak power. Powering the IM LS9 are ternary lithium-ion batteries sourced from CATL.
Production facilities for the IM LS9 are located in SAIC’s factories in Ningde, Fujian; Zhengzhou, Henan; Nanjing, Jiangsu; and Pudong, Shanghai. Following the publication of filing information, IM Motors shared the first official images of the IM LS9, heralding it as their flagship model.
This foray into hybrid technology aligns with IM Motors’ strategy to cater to the evolving preferences of consumers in the electric vehicle market. While the company currently offers BEV models like the IM L6, IM L7, IM LS6, and IM LS7, the introduction of the IM LS9 demonstrates a commitment to embracing extended-range technology.
In a landscape where plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and EREVs are gaining popularity, IM Motors joins other domestic EV manufacturers in diversifying their product portfolios. Notably, Nio remains a steadfast advocate for BEVs, while others explore hybrid options to meet consumer demand.
With the IM LS9 poised to make a mark as IM Motors’ flagship model, the company is poised to carve out a niche in the large extended-range SUV market. As the industry continues to evolve, IM Motors’ strategic pivot towards hybrid technology positions them for success in the rapidly changing landscape of electric vehicles.
